The Atkins diet, also known as low carb diet, consists of food entries that contain a large amount of protein with barely noticeable percentage of carbohydrates. It is named The Atkins diet after its inventor Dr. Robert Atkins. It is the diet Kim Kardashian used right after giving birth and she uses it each time she needs to lose some extra pounds.
Since the diet does not consider the required intake of vitamins and minerals, it is recommended to take a vitamin pill that will compensate for the obvious deficit of vitamins and minerals.
In this diet the intake of protein is not limited. No restrictions to eating meat, fish and eggs. Cheese, vegetables, olive oils and fats are eaten in limited quantities and alcoholic beverages, sugar, fruit, milk, yogurt, cereal, flour products and sweets are completely prohibited.
The diet consists of three stages:
Stage I – the first phase of this diet is changing the metabolism. Carbohydrate intake is limited to 20 grams per day. What to you eat? Well, let’s say, for breakfast you can eat and omelet made from two eggs with ham or bacon, for lunch grilled steak and boiled fish for dinner. The first phase lasts for 14 days.
Stage II – will achieve loss of body mass by consuming fat reserves. Daily intake of carbohydrates is limited to 15 to 40 grams. So, meat, vegetables (low-carb) and that’s it…
Stage III – Carbohydrates are allowed, but are limited to a maximum of 60 grams, whose limit is transferred to the phase of the maintenance of weight achieved.
Persons who have held this diet are advised that after reaching the desired weight they continue with limited intake of carbohydrates.
Critical review – Due to reduced intake of carbohydrates (Dr. Atkins recommends that they’re limited to a maximum intake of 60 grams a day), this diet has caused numerous controversies. Some studies have shown to longer-term implementation could affect the mental health and cause discontent, fatigue and lethargy. In particular, such symptoms were seen in women whose mood swings were more intense. Also, the risks are increased content of triglycerides in the blood, as well as increased content of saturated fatty acids. In addition, the first (introductory) phase of the Atkins diet can cause problems in people who normally consume large amounts of carbohydrates or in people who suffer from hypoglycemia because their bodies cannot be so quick to produce glucose to meet the needs of the brain and muscles, which results in sudden fatigue or lightheadedness.
On the other hand, another study found that the Atkins diet was most effective for weight loss.
